All animals require shelter, whether they walk, swim, or fly and avians are no exception to this law. The goal of this assignment is to design and create an avian sanctuary for a selected species of avian. This design must provide shelter from natural forces such as rain or snow, provide suitable space for the chosen avian, and address human-product interaction as well as avian-product interaction.

Marko Music: Kolasin Memorial Center

Located in Kolasin, Montenegro, this building heavily inspired my sanctuary. The key visual features of this memorial center are the massive triangular roof planes, complemented by the triangular opening, steep angles, and sharp points. I wanted to highlight many of these features in my sanctuary, while also exaggerating on them to make it my own.

Final Product

Made from red oak and sheet metal, this is the final design. It is a post-modernist/brutalist inspired design, based around the movement of planes against blocks. This sanctuary features a detachable roof through the utilization of hooks and rods that automatically removes when set down for easy, one-handed use.
